Afghanistan, July 9 (Press TV) A deadly bomb explosion has claimed the lives of more than two dozen people, including children, on a crowded road south of the Afghan capital.
The incident occurred on Thursday when an explosive-laden truck blew up 30 kilometers (19 miles) south of Kabul in Logar province, killing 25 people including many school children, Afghan officials said.
The truck, loaded with firewood, apparently overturned deliberately overnight about Mohammad Agha district and was detonated as authorities were trying to remove it.
"In the explosion today 21 civilians and four policemen have been martyred," said provincial police chief Ghulam Mustafa Mohsini, adding that four others including three students and a civilian were wounded.
Local officials had earlier identified 12 bodies, mostly school students, while the governor of Mohammad Agha district, Abdul Hameed Hamid said more people were feared to have died in the incident.
The blast also razed three shops and smashed windows up to one kilometer away from the site of the explosion.
Provincial government spokesman Din Mohammad Darwish said the explosives were hidden under firewood in the overturned truck, and 'were remotely detonated as a crowd gathered around the truck in the morning'.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
The blast happened hundreds of kilometers away from the southern Helmand province where the US military is engaged in a massive offensive against Taliban fighters.
The militants, ousted in the US-led invasion of the country in 2001, have been launching relentless bombing attacks on Afghan police and foreign forces, which have also claimed the lives of hundreds of civilians.
